Francis Ngannou: A Star is Born

2017 has been a disappointing year for the UFC. Buy rates have slumped alarmingly without Rousey or McGregor. Rousey is probably done and who knows when McGregor will enter a UFC cage again, so now more than ever the MMA giant needs new stars for the coming year and beyond.

At UFC 218 Francis Ngannou showed us that the UFC might very well have something very special on its hands. Ngannou destroyed the number one ranked Heavyweight Alistair Overeem inside a round, to set up a shot at the UFC Heavyweight Title sometime next year against the current Champoin Stipe Miocic.

Ngannou at 31, is unlike most of the current crop of UFC Heavyweights, he is still growing as a MMA fighter, his peak is still ahead of him, his current 11-1 record shows what a relative baby he still is.

Overeem is by some way the best opponent he has faced so far and Miocic will be a step up again, but when you have the sort of power Ngannou has, no opponent is out of reach.

People might say Overeem and previous opponent Andrei Arlovski have seen better days, but you can only beat what’s in front of you, and Ngannou other than an early career loss in his 2nd pro fight, has done nothing wrong.

Dana White thinks Ngannou could become a global superstar, he might be right.
