GSP vacates belt, Whittaker is undisputed champion and will make first defence against Rockhold

The undisputed UFC middleweight championship will be on the line in Australia on Feb. 10 (Feb. 11 local time), when Robert Whittaker defends his crown for the first time against former titleholder Luke Rockhold in the main event of UFC 221.

St-Pierre released this statement, “My fight at UFC 217 was one of the greatest nights of my life but I now need to take some time to focus on my health. Out of respect to the athletes and the sport, I don’t want to hold up the division. I will be giving up my belt and once I’m healthy I look forward to working with the UFC to determine what’s next in my career.” St-Pierre also intimated he would make a return to his natural fighting weight of welterweight.

After this statement the UFC elevated the interim title holder Whittaker to undisputed middleweight champion. He will challenge Rockhold, a previous holder of this belt in the main even in Perth.
